The Amsterdam School is a style in architecture, to be placed in the period of Modern Architecture, which also includes De Stijl, the New Building, the Chicago School and Expressionism, which can be seen as a reaction to the so-called neo-styles. The Amsterdam School is characterized by the use of expressive and fantastic forms, akin to Expressionism.
The Bungehuis typeface is modeled after the letters of an Art Deco building in Amsterdam from 1931. This building on Spuistraat, also known as ‘Het Bungehuis’, used to house offices, but is now part of the University of Amsterdam. It had its brief moment of fame in 2015, when students, demanding more democracy at the university, occupied it. Typographer David Kerkhoff designer of the font was inspired by The Amsterdam School
Based on the typography I designed a publication which shows in what ways the Bungehuis font can be used.
